Matte vs gloss laminates: which suits your space?

By The DSC Studio  ·  December 2025  ·  7 min read

It’s the question we’re asked more than any other: matte or gloss? Both are beautiful. But they behave very differently in daily life.

1. Fingerprints and cleaning

This is where the two part ways most dramatically. High-gloss shows every fingerprint, smudge and streak — stunning when clean, demanding to keep that way. Matte hides marks far better. If you have young children or a hard-working kitchen, matte will save your sanity.

2. Light and space

Gloss reflects light, which can make a small or dark room feel brighter and larger. Matte absorbs light for a softer, calmer mood. In a compact kitchen with little natural light, gloss can genuinely help.

Gloss makes a room sparkle. Matte makes a room settle. Neither is wrong.

3. The look you’re after

Gloss reads as sleek, modern and energetic. Matte reads as understated, sophisticated and current; it’s the finish most designers reach for today when they want quiet luxury.

4. Durability

Both are tough, but scratches tell a different story on each. On high-gloss, fine scratches catch the light and become visible over time. On matte, minor wear blends into the surface.

A quick way to decide

  1. Busy kitchen, kids, easy upkeep? → Matte.
  2. Small, dark room you want to brighten? → Gloss.
  3. Want the current designer look? → Matte, ideally textured.
  4. Love a bold, high-shine statement? → Gloss.

Still torn? Take home a sample of each, live with them near your window for a day, and watch how they handle your light and your fingerprints.
